Extended Family Photos: The Chapters You'll Be Grateful You Saved!

Life has a funny way of changing quietly.

The little cousins who once chased each other through the grass grow taller. The babies who needed to be held eventually become the ones helping Grandma walk. Holiday tables look a little different. New faces are added to the family, while some familiar voices become memories we would give anything to hear just one more time.

That is why extended family photos are about so much more than gathering everyone together, smiling at the camera, and hoping all of the kids cooperate.

They are about preserving your family authentically in the chapter it is in right in that moment- before life turns the page.

As a Scottsburg Indiana photographer and Southern Indiana family photographer, extended family sessions are some of the most meaningful stories I have the privilege of documenting. These Sessions preserve the big moments, the tiny interactions, the generations standing side by side, and all of the beautiful chaos that makes your family.... yours.

Because someday, these photographs will mean more than you could ever imagine.

The Best Bang for Your Buck: On Session, Photos for the Whole Family

Lets Talk about one of the biggest benefits of booking extended family photos: everyone gets beautiful, professional photographs without every individual household needing to schedule and pay for a completely separate session.

During an extended family session, we do so much more than take one large group photo.

I will photograph:

  • The entire extended family together

  • Grandparents with all of their children

  • Grandparents with their grandchildren

  • Each individual household

  • Couples

  • Siblings

  • Cousins

  • Parents with their children

  • The little in-between moments that happen natrually along the way

  • and SO MUCH MORE!!!

Instead of Grandma booking one session, each sibling booking another and every individual family trying to coordinate separate dates throughout the year, everyone comes together for one meaningful experience.

Each branch of the family receives photographs of their own household while also getting something that would be impossible to create during an individual family session: the entire family story, all in one gallery.

When the cost is shared between multiple households, extended family photos can be one of the best values in professional photography. Everyone walks away with updated family portraits, photographs with the people they love most, and memories that belong to the entire family.

One session. Multiple generations. An entire collection of stories preserved.

The Cousin Chapter: Built-In Best Friends and Beautiful Chaos

There is something so special about cousins.

They may spend family gatherings running through the yard, making up games no adult understands, sneaking snacks from the kitchen, whispering or laughing until someone inevitably gets a little too wild.

During extended family sessions, the moments between the little cousins are often some of my absolute favorites.

Of course, we will capture the photograph where everyone is looking at the camers- BUT we will also make room for the moments that feel like childhood.

  • The belly laughs.

  • The tiny hands holding each other.

  • The Older cousins helping the younger ones.

  • The silly faces.

  • The races through the grass.

  • The personalities that simply cannot be contained.

Right now, those moments may feel ordinary. The kids may see each other all the time, and the adults may be focused on keeping everyon's clothes clean long enough to take a photograph.

But years from now, those images will become somehitng entirely different.

One day, those little cousins will be gron. Their childhood summers will be memories. Their tiny hands will not be tiny anymore. They may live in different towns, build families of their own, and only see one another during holidays and special occasions. And someday, they will look back at these photographs and remember what it felt like to grow up together.

They will remember that Grandma and Grandpa's house was once their favorite place to play. They will laugh at their missing teeth, wild hair and personalities that have somehow stayed exactly the same.

Most importantly, they will have proof that before life became busy and everyone grew up, they shared a chapter together.

The Most Important Photographs: The Grandparents

This is the part that matters most.

We always think there will be more time.

  • Another Birthday

  • Another Christmas.

  • Another family dinner.

  • Andother summer evening sitting together on the porch.

  • Another chance to take the photograph.

But the truth is... we do not get to keep our grandparents forever.

One day, the photographs you almost did not schedule may become some of the most important things you own. You may look at an image and remember the way you Grandpa's hand felt wrapped around yours.

You may notice Grandma's smile and hear her laugh so clearly that, for just a moemnt, it feels like she is sitting beside you again.

Your children may grow up and forget how small they once looked in their grandparents' arms- but the photograph will remember them forever.

Someday, your child may show these images to children of their own and say: "This was your great- grandma. She gave the best hugs."

"This was your great-grandpa. He could make anyone and everyone laugh"

"Look how much they loved us."

That is the quiet magic of photography. A photograph cannot stop time. It cannot keep the people we love from growing older. But, it can hold onto a moment after time has carried it away. It preserves the way Grandama looked at her grandchildren, and the way Grandpa smiled when the entire family gathered around him. The hands that held generations of babies. The faces that helped build the family standing beside them.

Years from now, no one will care whether every child smiled perfectly. No one will remember if someone's outfit was wrinkled, the weather changed, or the kids refused to sit still. They will only be grateful that the photograph exists.

Because eventually, a family portrait becomes more than a fmaily portrait. It becomes a piece of someone you miss.

Preserve This Chapter Before Life Turns the Page

Maybe your family has welcomed a new baby.

Maybe the cousins are growing faster than anyone expected.

Maybe Grandma has been asking for an updated photograph of everyone together.

Or maybe it has simply been far too long since the entire family stood in front of a camera.

You do not need a milestone to preserve the people you love! Being together is reason enough.

If you have been searching for a Scottsburg Indiana photographer, a Southern Indiana family photographer, or someone to capture meaningful extended family photos, I would be honored to help tell this chapter of your family's story.

Because the photographs we take today are not only for us.

They are for the little cousins when they are grown.

They are for the grandchildren who will someday want to remember Grandma's smile.

They are for the future generations who will point to familiar faces and ask to hear their stories.

One day, these photographs may become the pages your family returns to again and again.

So gather the grand parents.

Bring all of the cousins.

Embrace the beautiful chaos.

And step into the frame.

Because someday, you will be incredibly grateful that everyone was there.
